Stephanie had barely turned before she felt herself being pushed farther and farther away from Geoff. She looked back at him, but he seemed enthralled by what a pretty young woman was saying to him. The other woman had a possessive hand on Geoff’s forearm and was smiling into his face. That didn’t bother her. What did bother her was the way Geoff returned the other woman’s smile. He was looking at her the same way he’d just looked at Stephanie. As if she and Stephanie were interchangeable.

“You aren’t special. Did you think you were?”

It took Stephanie a moment to realize that the comment had been directed to her. She turned and looked into a pair of cold, gray eyes. “What did you say?”

“I said you might think you mean something to Geoff, but you don’t. And he’s not your property.” The other woman swept her hand around the crowded concourse. “Look around. You’re one of many. So if you want more of his time, take a number. But in the meantime, get out of my way.”

Stephanie told herself that the other woman didn’t know what she was talking about. After all, Stephanie had come here with Geoff. But as she looked at him, she noticed he was giving his sweet smile to yet another woman and her confidence waned. How many other women had he smiled at that way over the years? And how many more would be the recipient before the night was over? Stephanie didn’t know and she wasn’t about to stand around and count. After all, hadn’t he said rodeo and relationships didn’t mix? Clearly she was the only one even considering the possibility.

Pushing her way through the throng of eager women, she finally reached Geoff. He looked at her and smiled. Despite knowing she was no more special to him than any of the other women awaiting his attention, her heart skipped a beat. She stood on tiptoes and spoke directly into his ear so that he could hear her over the voices of the women. “I got a call from the hospital. I need to go in and cover a shift.”

“Can’t they find anyone else?”

She shook her head, telling herself that wasn’t disappointment she saw in his eyes. Why would he be disappointed when he had hordes of adoring fans battling for his attention? “No. They tried everyone else.”

“How will you get there?”

“I’ll call for a ride.”

“Okay. I’ll talk to you later.”

She nodded, but he’d already turned back to yet another woman. Obviously that hadn’t been disappointment she’d seen on his face. It had only been a figment of her overactive imagination.

Just like the sudden shift at the hospital. It didn’t exist. She’d made it up. Anything to get out of here. Even sitting alone on her couch would be better than watching Geoff pose for selfies with these underdressed and over-made-up buckle bunnies. Telling herself she wasn’t jealous, Stephanie pressed through the throng and toward the exit. The farther away she got from Geoff, the fewer people there were and the faster she was able to walk.
